Jimmy Heuga Racing for MS on Bucksaw

August 13, 2015 by WSKI Leave a Comment

Jimmie Heuga was one of the first two American men to win an Olympic medal in Alpine skiing, and became a pioneering advocate of exercise and activity to combat multiple sclerosis, the disease that curtailed his athletic career. After the top-to-bottom Sugarloaf vertical challenge morphed into the Jimmy Heuga Fundraiser for MS, the objective of getting as much vertical as possible in one day caused the event to use a dedicated trail, Windrow, serviced by Bucksaw Chairlift. Now that Sugarloaf has announced Bucksaw is going away with no replacement being discussed, we are sad to see this family-friendly, wind resistant chairlift be quietly taken away this summer. Thanks for the memories, here are some to share!

Great way to see beautiful Bigelow!

July 21, 2015 by WSKI Leave a Comment

Out of the archives is this un-edited footage from the ’80s when horseback riding was available from Sugarloaf/USA as another non-winter activity to do in the region. There is a quick close up from afar of the fire tower at the summit of Bigelow Mtn, but although the tower & the horses are gone, that knock-out view from within the Bigelow Preserve along the shores of Flagstaff Lake still remains, with various ways to enjoy it; by foot, mountain bike, or boat! … or horse, if you bring your own! This is our backyard; you’re invited year-round! Come out & play!

4th of July in the Valley: ’80s style!

July 4, 2015 by WSKI Leave a Comment

Ice cream & kids & the 4th of July can only be improved upon by having a HUGE Sundae with a ton of kids to eat it before it melts! Yum!! It’s always been a great place to live for adventure seekers & relaxation experts: this footage from 1985 (best recollection!) shows it’s a great place to grow up, too!!

Happy 4th everyone!

The Summer Views from Our Mountain

June 13, 2015 by WSKI Leave a Comment

One of the best parts about living at a ski resort is having an easy way to see the view from up high of the surrounding mountains & valley below! Sugarloaf runs the SuperQuad on weekends during summer & autumn for everyone to have the chance to share the outstanding view & see why us ‘mountain people’ love where we live as much as we do! The view is unchanged from this raw (unedited) footage when the Gondi was a regular summer attraction; you just have to hike up a bit further to get to the summit for the same view of our surrounding peaks. Sugarloaf Marathon and 15K

May 14, 2015 by WSKI Leave a Comment

marathon

Now in its 33rd year, the Sugarloaf Marathon is Maine’s oldest continuously run marathon, drawing hundreds of runners from all over the U.S. and Eastern Canada each year. From Cathedral Pines in Eustis to downtown Kingfield, despite the mountainous surroundings, Sugarloaf’s course is widely known as a fast course. The final 16 miles of the course have an elevation loss of 980 feet, helping to make it common for runners to have personal best times on this course.
