From the boat launch off route 27, just north of the Village of Stratton, is where the South Branch of the Dead river flows into Flagstaff Lake. Watch for Eagles, Turtles and other wildlife as you meander up the Dead River. Paddle until it gets too shallow to go up river any further. On your return trip enjoy great views of the Bigelow range. Now that Reggae fest has past and the summer season is in sight, it’s time to make summer plans. There are lots of options here in the Valley to participate as well as employment opportunities. Maine Kayak Expeditions run by the owners of Happy Tunes offers summer kayaking trips on both Flagstaff Lake as well as the famous Rapid River. Talk about making memories that will last a lifetime! You never get over having your hometown permanently flooded over….
The Dead River was dammed in the 1950s to create Flagstaff Lake as a water storage facility for hydro power at a time when citizens had little to say about the demise of their village, farms, & life as they knew it on the north side of Bigelow Mountain. Betty Wyman was a girl at the time, & she visited WSKI with her son, Eustis/Stratton selectman Jay Wyman, to share memories of growing up in the western mountains of Maine, before there was skiing, & before there was a Flagstaff Lake.
