Little Bigelow is a great hike offering various terrain and views…
To get to the trailhead:
From Carrabassett Valley take the Carriage road located at Valley Crossing. Drive the Carriage road for about 5 miles to the end. Take a left and you’ll soon see a large sign marking Bigelow Preserve. Just past the sign you’ll come to a fork in the road, bear left here. Almost immediately on your right there is a parking area as well as access to Flagstaff lake. Park your car here. Ensuring we can ‘play’ in our mountains forever…
Simon Rucker recently paid us a visit to share news about the latest endeavors on behalf of the Maine Appalachian Land Trust & others who are devoted to making sure that our mountains, & their wildlife, waters & endless natural wonders, are able to be accessed & appreciated not only by us now, but also the generations to follow, so they, too, can cherish the Maine High Peaks as we do today!!
Longfellow Mountains Heritage Trail
Larry Warren was a guest on one of WSKI’s live shows recently to discuss the plans for a trail from the Canadian Border to Kingfield to tie the Maine Huts & Trails and Appalachian Trail into the decades old proposed International Loop Trail following Benedict Arnold’s journey from the Dead River (now Flagstaff Lake)to the Canadian Border, where it will connect to the Sentiers Frontaliers in QC.
More on Hiking Bigelow via the Appalachian Trail
A few years ago when we made a commitment to bringing local information to our viewers to make their stay in the Maine High Peaks Region the best it can be, two of the first videos produced by our intrepid “Lonely Hiker” were for hikes on the AT at either end of the Bigelow Range. At the NW end is Cranberry Peak & at the SE end is Little Bigelow, both moderate hikes, &, in these videos, both are a good snowshoe trip in the winter, too!
Our production quality has become better since those days, but we trust the info is still useful for anyone who wants a glimpse at our region’s Appalachian Trail sections. We celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the completion of the last two miles of the entire AT between Sugarloaf & Spaulding Mtns. on Aug. 18, 2012.
