Mt. Aziscohos Hike

August 7, 2014 by WSKI Leave a Comment

The Rangeley Lakes region is full of great things to do in the outdoors. Whether it be fishing, boating, biking, hiking or just enjoying the sounds of the wind blowing through the trees or the birds singing, there is something for everyone. From the summit of Mt. Aziscohos you get a bird’s eye view of the Rangeley Lakes region. In fact over 20 lakes and ponds can be seen from the summit in all directions from Maine to New Hampshire and into Canada. This is a great day hike for all abilities including kids. One fairly steep, but short section of  hiking along the trail rewards you with a breathtaking 360 degree view of the surrounding area.

To get there: From the junction of Routes 4 and 16 in Oquossoc: Continue on Rt. 16 towards Wilsons Mills. The easiest way to find the trailhead is to drive untill you reach Aziscohos Dam (on your right, before Wilsons Mills). From the dam, backtrack exactly one mile and park your car at a small turnout on the right. There is a sign that says “Trail” that heads into the woods from the right side (west) of the road.

Mike Feldman & Scott Gregory were our guests on WSKI’s Mountain Report in Jan. 2014 when the Special Olympics were in Carrabassett Valley for the Winter Games. No matter the cold; the event ALWAYS warms our hearts to have so many enjoy fun in the snow as part of this many decades old tradition at Sugarloaf!

July 14, 2014 by WSKI Leave a Comment

Crocker Mountain, at 4,228 ft (1,289 m) is the third highest mountain in Maine after Sugarloaf Mountain, and is traversed by the Appalachian Trail (AT). A glacial cirque called “Crocker Cirque” is located between the main summit and the lower summit of South Crocker Mountain. Crocker Cirque contains a small pond and can be reached via the Appalachian Trail, and this video will take you there!

Snowshoeing the Appalachian Trail

January 29, 2014 by WSKI Leave a Comment

Snowshoe the AT

Most people think of hiking the AT as a summer adventure, but in Maine’s High Peaks, the magic of winter wonderland is best seen on snowshoes when the thru-hikers have long gone & the woods & trails are yours alone to explore, with the leaves gone from the trees & so much more to see along the way! The Appalachian Trail is one of many places to discover & enjoy this winter; watch for wildlife, bring your camera, be prepared, & HAVE FUN OUTSIDE!
