Carrabassett’s emerging reputation as a destination for mountain bikers is attracting more visitors in the warmer months, & WSKI is always on board with any organization who encourages outdoor activities such as biking, SO we invited Nancy Grant to be our guest to share news about BikeMaine, an event offered by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, a nonprofit organization with more than 5,000 members working to make Maine better through biking and walking. Although the event does not encompass our region, we support the “Get Outside” message! BikeMaine is a fully-supported, seven day cycling tour held in mid-September; cyclists pedal an average of 55 miles per day along moderately challenging terrain from Maine’s rocky coastline, to the foothills & lakes inland to Bethel. Maine Huts & Trails for Outside Television
A few years ago, video producer Dave Huot showcased the new & growing Maine Huts & Trails to our affiliates across the USA with this video that aired from Coast to Coast. There are now FOUR Huts, & some faces have moved on to other ventures, but the jist of the piece remains relevant: MHT has the answers to your desire to cross-country ski, or hike or bike in the warmer months, through the Maine High Peaks region’s beautiful terrain, & enjoy the comforts of food & accommodation provided at the Huts at the end of your adventure!! Book your reservation today!! mainehuts.org
The legendary Inferno!
Not many races are almost as much fun for spectators as participants, but on a couple crucial downhill corners, the entertainment factor is indeed very high!!
This race from the bottom of King Pine chairlift to the Outdoor Center is not for beginner cross-country skiers, but for every one else with some capacity for skinny skiing, gravity does all the work (mostly!), all you have to do is stand up & steer from time to time!!
Register before 9a.m. Sunday; catch this race 11a.m. start Mar. 8, don’t be late because you forgot the clocks go ahead Saturday night!!!
Longfellow Mountains Heritage Trail
Larry Warren was a guest on one of WSKI’s live shows recently to discuss the plans for a trail from the Canadian Border to Kingfield to tie the Maine Huts & Trails and Appalachian Trail into the decades old proposed International Loop Trail following Benedict Arnold’s journey from the Dead River (now Flagstaff Lake)to the Canadian Border, where it will connect to the Sentiers Frontaliers in QC.
News from Sentiers Frontaliers (the Border Trails!)
2015 is the 20th anniversary of when our northern neighbors began the extensive, fantastic hiking trail system which covers the distance from St. Augustin du Woburn (Rt. 27 Border Crossing) to Chartierville (N.H. Border Crossing), in Quebec, roughly along the ridge of the International Border hills, as well as many spurs on Mt. Gosford & Mt. Megantic, linking terrain that goes from mild to wild, & is appreciated year-round by hikers & snow-shoers alike! Our friends Andre & Monique paid us a visit to share their update: go check out their trails, if not this winter, next summer, for sure!! Bienvenue au Quebec!
