Enjoy some classic ski film footage from forty plus years back! This fabulous bit of Sugarloaf marketing from the late ’60s is not exactly GoPro quality, but the essence of Sugarloaf is captured completely, & that’s still the reason why we love this region! Way back then, Sugarloaf was already the king of spring & we wrote the book on how to have a great time!!!!!!
Carrabassett River Canoe Race: another event from our Archives…
Sugarloaf held canoe races on the Dead & Carrabassett Rivers for many years during spring thaw, which drew paddlers from wide & far to take advantage of the high water-whitewater! It drew tons of spectators, too, with easy viewing along Rt. 27 in many places. Happy Spring memories from mountain melting water adventures in Carrabassett a while ago… the river still runs; go get it while you can!!!
Cheers to Emma & Emily! They paddled the 740 mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail
While there was still snow in the woods and ice on some ponds, two friends began a 740-mile journey from Old Forge, New York to Fort Kent, Maine on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail on April 23, 2013. Emma Carlson of Maine and Emily Rooney of Vermont launched from the start of the Trail at the boat dock in Old Forge. They completed the four-state and one Canadian province trail in 40 days. During the journey the women communicated with a second grade class at the W.G. Mallett School in Farmington, Maine, taught by Ms. Carlson’s mother. Travelling by canoe, the paddlers kept the trip technology free by avoiding the use of cell phones and computers, choosing instead to communicate with postcards in the mail. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail is the longest paddling trail in the nation and runs from Old Forge, New York through Vermont, Québec, and New Hampshire to Fort Kent, Maine. In 2011 the NFCT was named “Best Canoe Trail” by Outside Magazine and in 2012 the magazine named the Trail a “Best East Coast Adventure.” FMI: northernforestcanoetrail.org or call 802-496-2285.

North Branch of Dead River
When the water is flowing at moderate levels (like it is at the moment!), the North Branch of the Dead River above Eustis is a PERFECT stretch of water for kayak or canoe! Sarampus Falls is about 15 minutes north of Stratton Village with a State Rest Area for putting in. The water is just exciting enough to be fun, without being too radical for paddlers of less than extreme abilities, so grab a boat & paddle, & head north! Remember, the water’s SUPER CHILLY in spring running off the mountains, so PFDs are worn by the wise!!!!
