In the Sugarloaf region this weekend? Looking for some ideas on things to do? Well read on folks… First lets talk about the weather. It’s forecasted to be a great weekend with sunny skies, high temperatures reaching the 70 degree mark and overnight lows down into the upper 30’s. Remember mountain weather can change quickly so always be prepared when out exploring and enjoying the outdoors. If you’ll be on some of the high summits in the region, take note that temperatures can usually be about 10 degrees cooler than at the base of the mtns. Winds can come into the picture as well and make it feel much colder. In short, be sure to have some warm clothing with you if you’re at high elevations.
Now for some stuff to do: Flagstaff lake has filled up nicely and is great for a weekend adventure on the water or a short trip in your canoe or kayak. Some good access points to put in are the boat launch just north of Stratton on rt27 or Myers beach which can be reached by driving to the end of the Flagstaff road just across from the post office in Eustis.
With the recent rain the North Branch of the Dead river would be a fun paddle as well from Sarampus falls down to Eustis. See a video package of this paddle here.
Great views should be able to be seen from any of the higher summits in the region this weekend if hiking is what you crave. About an hours drive from Carrabassett Valley is Tumbledown mtn. This is a great spring hike and if your into fishing bring along your rod and reel and try your luck in the alpine pond. Check out the video here.
Got your bikes? The mountain bike trails are all is great shape (may be a bit soggy in areas after this weeks rainfall). You can head out from the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, the Narrow Gauge Trail at Campbell field, or check out the Maine Huts and Trails trail corridor for endless options on two wheels.
Speaking of Maine Huts and Trails this weekend they are offering a mothers day family Weekend (May 11-13). The weekend is filled with lots of nature oriented activities for the whole family and a special Sunday morning treat for mom. For more info go to mainehuts.org.
The opportunities to get out and explore the western Maine mountains are endless. These are just a couple of ideas of things to do. Browse around this website and you’ll find much more. Be safe and have fun out there!
