What is old is new again as the announcement of a Pro Ski Tour being re-introduced brings excitement to the world of ski racing for the first time in three decades, giving an opportunity to racers everywhere to hit the slopes for cash prizes once their Olympic aspirations are retired. CV resident Craig Marshall will be working for the former Red Stallion owner Ed Rogers, who created the circuit originally. Racers Ready???
Ski Maine’s Greg Sweetser
Long time friend Greg Sweetser came by for an update on what’s happening across the Pine Tree State this winter at areas big & small from north to south: in a place where our winters tend to last a few (several) months, there’s no excuses not to embrace the outside lifestyle year-round no matter where in Maine you may be!! Think Snow!!
Lots to know On the Mountain this Holiday Season
From Nightlife, to Dining, New Year’s planning & more! Tune into our twelve live shows Christmas week for all the info you need to Know Before You Go, on & off the slopes! Merry Christmas everyone… p.s. Dear Santa, please bring Winter!!!
World Snowboarding Day w/ the World’s Best Snowboarder!!!
OK, so we may be a little biased, but 2 Olympic Gold Medals pretty much puts anyone on the BEST List, for sure! The whole planet is celebrating the 10th annual World Snowboard day on this weekend to introduce new people to the snowport, and celebrate the camaraderie among riders. The weekend event will feature a free showing of the Transworld Snowboard’s new movie, Origins, & discounted learn-to-ride lessons for beginners, plus free snowboard demos at the Burton Signature Store (say Hi to our guy Jonny!), as well as an ollie contest on The Beach. Only at Sugarloaf will two-time Olympic snowboardcross gold medalist, Seth Wescott, be hosting group rides regularly throughout the day!
Who remembers when we had hang-gliding at Sugarloaf???
Once again, a million Thank Yous to Michael Thom whose film camera captured rare footage of the hang-gliding ‘festival’we had in the ’70s at a time when a couple locals were doing it regularly (as often as possible!). This event was a real draw for the locals… the Who’s Who of the region can all be seen, from our beloved Uncle Al, to the Mountain’s Real Estate agent C. Susan Mason, to Wende Frutchy (now Gray & on BOD Ski Museum of Maine) then Mountain Marketing, & lots of other familiar faces of the times!! I’m pretty sure the weather didn’t co-operate for the fliers though, which was too typical of why it never became a bigger destination for hang-gliders… the old ‘wind in the Mountains’ factor made it too rare to be good to go! It WAS cool when it was happening though!!!
