One of the many local jewels our sparkling clear mountain waters give to us to enjoy, is Shadagee Falls on the North Branch of the Dead River, just off the Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway, in Jim Pond Township north of Eustis. Here’s  a paddler’s view during spring run-off (note snow on the banks!). We’ve had a lot of high water the past couple months for some excellent paddling conditions due to all the rain! The beauty of the spot changes throughout the four seasons, but it is in summer when levels are lower, particularly on a hot day, when the pleasure of the feel of those always cool waters of the Dead, & the Falls distinct rock ledges, give more reasons for stopping by with your bathing suit for a quick, or extended, dip! Bald Mountain Hike in Oquossoc

August 5, 2011 by WSKI Leave a Comment

This is a super, relatively easy half-day hike with a million dollar view of the western Maine mountains & lakes. Bald Mountain directions from Sugarloaf Ski Resort: From the base of the Sugarloaf access road, head North (Right) on ME 27/16. Once in Stratton Take a Left (S.West) onto ME 16 towards Rangeley. Continue on ME 16 (Watch for Moose!!!) until the junction on RT 4 in Rangeley. Turn Right (West) onto RT 4 towards Oquossoc. About 6 miles west of Rangeley look for Bald Mtn road on the left after the junction of RT 17 in Oquossoc. After turning onto Bald Mtn Road you will see a sign and parking area on the left of the Bald Mtn Hiking Trail. The Trail heads East from the parking area.
