Sugarloaf Marathon and 15K

May 14, 2015 by WSKI Leave a Comment

marathon

Now in its 33rd year, the Sugarloaf Marathon is Maine’s oldest continuously run marathon, drawing hundreds of runners from all over the U.S. and Eastern Canada each year. From Cathedral Pines in Eustis to downtown Kingfield, despite the mountainous surroundings, Sugarloaf’s course is widely known as a fast course. The final 16 miles of the course have an elevation loss of 980 feet, helping to make it common for runners to have personal best times on this course.

Spring ALSO means Fishing Season in the Maine High Peaks Region!

Flyfish

While the skiing continues on the Mountain, the fishing has begun on the streams & rivers as water opens under the warm sunshine! While lakes & ponds are still holding onto the ice, keen anglers are eager to cast a line & begin the new season. Our region has a number of Registered Maine Guides who are available to show you the hot spots if you are already experienced, teach you how to fly-fish if you’re not experienced, & share with you the local knowledge that will give you an appreciation for our region in ways you won’t expect! WSKI was happy to have Carrabassett Valley resident Bob Duport on the Mountain Report to give us the low-down on this Rite of Spring so revered locally, so stick that “Gone Fishing” sign on your door & cast a line w/ Bob! Maine Maple Sunday at Sugarloaf’s Sugarshack

March 29, 2015 by WSKI Leave a Comment

WSKI was lucky enough to get an early morning tour of Sugarloaf’s own Sugarshack on Maine Maple Sunday. Danny Barker walks us through the process, and thanks to Gifford’s, we enjoyed some of Sugarloaf’s own maple syrup atop some tasty vanilla ice cream.  Maine Maple Sunday is a day where the sugarshacks across the state open up their doors to the public to learn about this great pastime. Sugarloaf’s sap comes straight from big ole maple trees over on West Mtn. [Read more…]

1971 World Cup

March 24, 2015 by WSKI Leave a Comment

Solidifying Sugarloaf as a racer’s mountain five-plus decades ago, were the World Cup races that were moved to Maine after poor snow in Europe caused a change in venue in early 1971. The Narrow Gauge trail was, & remains today, a fantastic trail for speed events to slalom courses, & though the gear, grooming & generations have changed since then, the thrill never stops, or diminishes for that matter, for the run down our beloved ‘Gauge’! Go fast everyone, & Good Luck at the Nats this week!!
