From every corner of the State, Special Olympians arrived at Sugarloaf for their Winter Games this week, as they have since 1984, to ski, snowshoe, skate, enjoy a snowmobile ride, & share in all the fun outdoors activities that make the Maine High Peaks Region a place to have fun in the snow for everyone! From the HUGE Community Supper in the Baselodge on Sunday night, & the Opening Ceremony on Monday, to all the day-time competitions & the Torchlight Parade & Fireworks Monday night, the endless smiles & enthusiasm of the Special Olympians make them our favorite visitors year after year! Crocker: a special Place, hopefully Forever!
Wolf Tone of the Trust for Public Land in Maine gives an update on how the fund-raising is going to buy & protect in perpetuity the wilderness of Crocker Mountain & 18,000 acres of its surrounding area down to Orbeton Stream in Phillips. ‘Old’ school lift instruction….
It’s beginning to look like an ‘old’ winter with lots of SNOW, & a bit of wind & cold that make surface lifts an ‘old’ option still good to have so we can get to the snow stashes in various nooks & crannies on the mountain from the top of #3 (Bateau) T-bar!
Some ‘old-timers’ will remember when #5 was where Misery Whip is, off the top of King Pine. This archive footage may prove helpful for the current generation(s) who haven’t had the pleasure of growing up with surface lifts of ‘old’!!! [Read more…]

Snowmakers Back at it after a quick warm up
Warm temps over the past weekend and first of the week gave the Sugarloaf Snowmakers a nice break to get some rest and thaw out. As temps dropped Tuesday afternoon snowmakers geared up and are out “hittin’ in haad” on trails like Sluice, Kings Landing, Skidder, Tote road and more.
