South of Kingfield the Carrabassett meanders through a bit of Somerset County & you will find the Wire Bridge spanning the Carrabassett River in New Portland at a place where the river access is ideal for families on a hot day when the water’s not running high! A unique structure, the only survivor of four such bridges built in Maine in the 1800′s, probably the only such bridge still standing in the U.S., the building of the bridge began in 1864, was completed in 1866, renovated in 1961, & again in 2009-2010. The tower framing timbers and main support cables are the original material. The span between towers is 198 feet. Very cool must-see on your summer itinerary!
