Lots happening this weekend in the Western Mountains of Maine. Let’s start off with the weather. Forecasts call for rain and drizzle to end Saturday. We should see highs around 60 degrees on Saturday with overnight lows in the mid 30’s. Sunday looks like the pick of the weekend with forecasted highs in the mid 60’s with full sunshine, perfect for any outdoor activities. If you want to get out and enjoy some of the many trails, whether it be on foot or on your mountain bike you can expect some wet conditions as it has rained most of this past week here in the mountains. For a few ideas on some great hikes look no further than the Appalachian Trail. See a few short hikes that are great with the kids here: http://www.wskitv.com/2012/05/04/appalachian-trail-endless-oppurtunities-right-in-our-backyard/ If you’ve got your mountain bikes with you a great place to enjoy some singletrack is the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center 1 mi south of the Sugarloaf access rd. For a mellower ride the Narrow Gauge Pathway with access from a few different spots in Carrabassett Valley, is a great place to start. Don’t forget about Flagstaff lake as well if you’ve got your canoes or kayaks…
Some scheduled events: On Saturday there is a hunters breakfast from 7:30-10am at the Kingfield United Methodist Church to get you fueled up for a day outside. FMI: 265-4921. Also on Saturday is the 5th annual walk a thon in Stratton to benefit the Dead River Area Historical Society. It’s an easy 4mi walk with drinks and snacks provided. FMI: 246-2271. The University of Maine at Farmington is holding a “Sandy River Cinco De Mayo Canoe/Kayak race and fun paddle” on Saturday as well. Join the fun as you make your way down the Sandy River from Strong to the Fairbanks bridge in Farmington. FMI: 778-7495.
On Sunday don’t miss out on the 22nd annual Pan NE Steelband festival happening on the lawn at the Sugarloaf Inn. This is a free event and great for the whole family. Bring your lawn chair and Hawaiian shirts as tropical sounds will fill the air throughout the day. The Shipyard brewhaus will be serving food as well. FMI: sugarloaf.com
