With the slow and very wet start to spring the ATV trails have remained closed per landowners request. It looks like it’ll be one more weekend letting the trails drain and dry out. So, June 7th is the date. Area clubs and landowners thank you in advance for respecting the closures and in the end it’ll save time, money and make for a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Remember to patronize the local businesses, be safe and have fun! [Read more…]
Arnold Trail Historical Society reps visit WSKI
After years of trying to track someone down to be on our Mountain Report show to talk about this historical event that happened so ‘long ago’ but not at all ‘far away’, we found two locals who are part of the ATHS, Kenny Wing & Rocky Freeman, right under our noses! The story of Benedict Arnold’s march to Quebec City from Newburyport, Mass. is a tale of heroic efforts, valiant attempts to persevere… & harsh weather & conditions that led to very high attrition along the way…. with some of their worst terrain & experiences right in our backyard north to Lac Megantic! Check out arnoldsmarch.com for more info on this fascinating piece of history that you can explore.. re-trace their route & imagine as you go…!
News from Sentiers Frontaliers (the Border Trails!)
2015 is the 20th anniversary of when our northern neighbors began the extensive, fantastic hiking trail system which covers the distance from St. Augustin du Woburn (Rt. 27 Border Crossing) to Chartierville (N.H. Border Crossing), in Quebec, roughly along the ridge of the International Border hills, as well as many spurs on Mt. Gosford & Mt. Megantic, linking terrain that goes from mild to wild, & is appreciated year-round by hikers & snow-shoers alike! Our friends Andre & Monique paid us a visit to share their update: go check out their trails, if not this winter, next summer, for sure!! Bienvenue au Quebec!

Quebec’s Border Trails are another reason for a day-trip north from the High Peaks Region
Less than forty miles north on Maine’s High Peaks Scenic Byway, you will find a Sentiers Frontaliers trailhead within sight of the Customs Station. The 135-km (80 mi.) walking network links the Parc national du Mont-Mégantic and the Chartierville/NH and Woburn/Coburn Gore border crossings. The network connects to the Appalachian Trail via the Cohos Trail in N.H. in the U.S. White Mountain National Forest, which is 162 miles from Crawford Notch to the Canadian border in Pittsburg, NH. Work is in progress to link our region from the Appalachian Trail in Stratton-Wyman, to Coburn Gore, so an international hiking loop will create a 300+ mile adventure like nothing else that exists in North America. The Sentiers Frontaliers’ driving force, Andre Blais, from Lac Megantic, was our Guest on WSKI’s Mountain Report to tell us all about the fantastic trails in place just across the Border in Quebec.
