Hurricane Knoll. Voted riders choice for 2017. Check it out!
Hurricane Knoll (trail 129) was the 2017 Riders Choice (favorite trail) winner for the Carrabassett Region. It offers fantastic views in all directions. Being high upon a knoll off of trail 50 in the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center it’s guaranteed to get your heart pumping. The trail is littered with smooth flowy singletrack as well as lots of bermed turns and some fun ledgey roll overs. It’s a must do if you’re riding in the Carrabassett Region. [Read more…]
New Portland’s Wire Bridge
South of Kingfield the Carrabassett meanders through a bit of Somerset County & you will find the Wire Bridge spanning the Carrabassett River in New Portland at a place where the river access is ideal for families on a hot day when the water’s not running high! A unique structure, the only survivor of four such bridges built in Maine in the 1800′s, probably the only such bridge still standing in the U.S., the building of the bridge began in 1864, was completed in 1866, renovated in 1961, & again in 2009-2010. The tower framing timbers and main support cables are the original material. The span between towers is 198 feet. Very cool must-see on your summer itinerary!
There’s a bridge out but a new one is underway……
This time, knock on wood, we’ll get it done so that this pattern of high water events taking out the Campbell Field bridge to be able to park & ride/walk on the Narrow Gauge, will be OVER!! Construction has begun. We can’t wait till we can regain access at that convenient location again! We’ll cross our fingers, too, for no high water happening during the building phase so they can get it done as effeciently as possible, please!!
